Radical Bakers Gathering is our main event of the year, held at Crabapple Community, Shrewsbury, one of the oldest housing co-ops in the UK. The stream that runs through our workshops is that they involve practical tasks we can do together to achieve a greater goal. There are nice canvas spaces with practical workshops along with live music on the Green Dragon Solar Stage. We run a cafe bar and offer fully catered tickets. We sold out in 2018 and 2019.
Tickets available only from the bottom of this page.
Our 2021 event will be smaller and more spread out than usual and we will have various measures in place like limited workshop sizes, hot hand-wash and an outdoor stage with covered areas. We have a licence from the council and a Covid management plan. There will be a full programme of workshops and a decent band or two each night. We are planning a Crafty Show-and-tell, where people can showcase the new skills they have learned. As usual we will have the Baking area, Team Bake-off, Camp Market, Green Woodworking and Textiles as well as Wild Plant walks and a tour of Crabapple.
So far we have confirmed workshops from: Julie Henderson – Textiles and Upcycling, Ryan Fox – Herbal first aid and cooking with foraged food, Edwina Staniforth – Herb Walk and Cordage, Neil Hopkins and Mike Craig – Green Woodworking, Diane Holness – Seed Saving, Annie Levy – Creative Fermenting, Jane and Seggy – Haybox Cookery, Polly Wilde – Choir. Many more to be added over the coming months. Check out our workshops archive.
You can arrive from Thursday midday and the cafe is open Thursday night with music and pizza.
Radical Bakers workshops start at 5pm on Friday with crafts and a few scheduled sessions including a tour of Crabapple. The Gathering Introduction is at Friday 9pm with live music and a bar. It would be great if you could make it to this opening session.
Saturday workshops start at 9am with a few early morning baking and yoga sessions before this. They finish at 6pm with live music from 8, a bar until midnight, several small communal fires and acoustic music til 1am.
The workshops on Sunday start at 10am and finish at 4pm, followed by the Team Bake-off, with wood-fired pizza, a bar and music on Sunday evening.
You are welcome to stay until midday Monday.
A detailed Timetable will be available to download just before the event.
The Bakery has a prep area with catering surfaces, organic Heritage flours, grains, grain mill, proving cupboard, gas-fired and wood-fired ovens and a dedicated team. It is open all weekend for baking sessions including The Team Bake-Off, Milling grains and Sourdough and a Young Bakers session.
In our beautiful, creative Textiles Tent we have things like: Up-cycling textiles with Julie Henderson and Spinning, Dyeing and Textile sovereignty with Stella Berg. Under our crafts awnings: Green woodworking with Mike and Neil, Willow crafts with Ann and Raku pottery with Julian. Ed Revill brings his charcoal oven, makes simple no-knead sourdough and talks about Soil building, Biochar and Smallholding. Please check the list of confirmed workshops for this year.
Confirmed music for Radical Bakers Summer Gathering 2021: Our Saturday night headliners are The Weirdstring Band, supported by Birds and Beasts. More quality music to be announced over the coming months.
The Green Dragon stage uses top-quality modern PA equipment and is powered from the sun. More music announcements soon, we have a headline and a support act on Friday and Saturday and acoustic music on Sunday eve.
There is a quiet camping area and the amplified music ends at midnight.
There are only 100 adult places in 2021, with most people having rolled their tickets over from last year, this means there are limited tickets available. There are no day tickets or tickets on the gate.
